Last Castle
Last Castle is a monochromatic photograph series. With one guide and eight photographs depicting the seashore of Qieding, the series are exhibited in remembrance of the castles which has been gone, and serving as a reference for castle constructions in the future.
Starting from the construction guide, which offers multiple steps of how to build a castle of your own, visualizing it on the beach. Then, eight historical sites of castles were recorded respectively by eight photographs, as suggestions for the selection of new construction location. However, the landscape of the seashore of Qieding has changed rapidly and enormously. It wasn’t as expansive as before. Waves reach deep into the land, approaching closely to the castle. Dunes become high and steep, being no longer smooth and gentle like before. Looking back to those castles built in the old times, how magnificent, and how beautiful they were. It is a question which has to be contemplated repeatedly by the master of the new castle. The question of whether to use the old sites for the erection.
The following is the translation of the castle construction guide:
“You have to understand, the building location must not be too high nor too low”
The white sands are so light they will dance with the sea winds.
The dampened mud flows on the other hand, which couldn’t resist the slopes.
Select a place on the edge where bubbles disappear, and dig a one-arm deep hole.
Take the earth beside it to build a base, the mud inside it to rise the tower.
Use sand and salt as roof tiles, cobblestone as gate doors.
Then finally, draw water to surround the wall, to protect from unexpected invasions.
Remember to take a last glance before going home, since it will be no more when sun rises again.
